The Networking and Security educational laboratory hosts students at B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. level for education and research activities on wireless networks, 5G and beyond, software defined networking and radios, cybersecurity and vulnerability testing.

Research activities

The Internet technology is representing the "information highway" for the modern society. However, while being capable of supporting a wide range of applications (from communications to banking, from video streaming and gaming to e-health), such technology is continually evolving requiring professionals operating the ICT domain to be capable of understanding and implementing (i) novel networking solutions to improve service support and (ii) proper security measures and protocols to enable secure access to services and privacy preservation.

The Laboratory offers an experimental facility to undergraduate, graduate and PhD students for experimenting hands-on technologies in networking and cybersecurity. The purpose of the lab is to enable the students to get involved into cutting edge technologies from theory to practice, from models to design to implementation and prototyping.

The research activites of the laboratory are mostly focused on the two main research groups involved: Cybersecurity and Next Generation Networks.

Equipment

The laboratory consists of two rooms, both equipped with workstations and routers (to build and test real networks) as well as virtualized facilities (to emulate networks and services) and software defined platforms (to build and test actual communication systems).

In particular, one laboratory room is equipped with 16 laptops connected to virtualized servers to build isolated networks for security testing and beamers to support live lectures.

The second laboratory room hosts devices dedicated to group projects or theses, such as a 5G indoor Base Station, several Software Defined Radio platforms and acoustic sensors.
