Agreement Signed with Zhuhai College of Science and Technology, China
On July 2nd, a significant framework agreement was signed between the Zhuhai College of Science and Technology, China, and the University of Trento, represented by the Director of the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI), Professor Luigi Palopoli.
The agreement covers both education and research.
In terms of education, the agreement outlines an innovative 3+1+1 program that will bring approximately 20 Chinese students in their final year of their bachelor's degree to DISI. These students will complete their thesis work in Trento and will also have the opportunity to attend master's degree courses free of charge. The first group of students is expected to arrive in September.
Regarding research, the International Joint Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Society has been inaugurated. Professor Fausto Giunchiglia is the scientific director, and the laboratory's objective is to train researchers and professors specializing in the application of artificial intelligence to societal contexts.
"This agreement - comments Professor Palopoli - is a significant growth opportunity for both us and our Chinese partners. The spirit in which it was formed reveals the two universities' desire to build bridges of friendship, at a time when the world seems to be moving in other directions. From a practical standpoint, the Chinese students will bring us new vitality during a period when underfunding and demographic decline cast dark clouds over the future of universities in our country."
"This joint laboratory - adds Professor Giunchiglia - is a crucial initial example of how the University of Trento, and specifically DISI, can position itself at the center of a series of international collaborations, both educational and research-focused, in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Specifically, the goal of this joint laboratory is to develop AI methodologies, technologies, and systems that are reliable and designed to operate in the best interest of individuals. We'll focus on systems that can help improve people's quality of life while also fostering social relationships where it's easier to support or be supported by others in solving everyday problems."
