Education

Lorenzo Bruzzone received the Laurea (M.S.) degree in electronic engineering (summa cum laude) and the Ph.D. degree in telecommunications from the University of Genoa, Italy, in 1993 and 1998, respectively. He is currently a Full Professor of telecommunications at the University of Trento, Italy, where he teaches remote sensing, radar, and digital communications. Dr. Bruzzone is the founder and the director of the Remote Sensing Laboratory in the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, University of Trento. His current research interests are in the areas of remote sensing, radar and SAR, signal processing, machine learning and pattern recognition. He promotes and supervises research on these topics within the frameworks of many national and international projects. He is the Principal Investigator of many research projects. Among the others, he is the Principal Investigator of the Radar for icy Moon exploration (RIME) instrument in the framework of the JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission of the European Space Agency. He is the author (or coauthor) of 218 scientific publications in referred international journals (157 in IEEE journals), more than 290 papers in conference proceedings, and 21 book chapters. He is editor/co-editor of 18 books/conference proceedings and 1 scientific book. His papers are highly cited, as proven from the total number of citations (more than 25000) and the value of the h-index (73) (source: Google Scholar). He was invited as keynote speaker in many international conferences and workshops. Dr. Bruzzone ranked first place in the Student Prize Paper Competition of the 1998 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (Seattle, July 1998). Since that time he was recipient of many international and national honors and awards, including the recent IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society 2015 Outstanding Service Award and the 2017 and 2018 IEEE IGARSS Symposium Prize Paper Awards. In the past years joint papers presented by his students at international symposia and Master/PhD theses that he supervised have received awards. Dr. Bruzzone is the co-founder of the IEEE International Workshop on the Analysis of Multi-Temporal Remote-Sensing Images (MultiTemp) series and is currently a member of the Permanent Steering Committee of this series of workshops. Since 2003 he has been the Chair of the SPIE Conference on Image and Signal Processing for Remote Sensing. He was a Guest Co-Editor of many Special Issues of international journals. From 2010 to 2012 he was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING NEWSLETTER. He has been the founder of the IEEE GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING MAGAZINE for which he was the Editor-in-Chief between 2013 and 2017. From 2004 to 2006 he served as an Associated Editor of the IEEE GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING LETTERS. Currently he is an Associate Editor for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING. He has been Distinguished Speaker of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society between 2012 and 2016. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a member of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) and of the Italian Association for Remote Sensing (AIT).

·       Recipient of the 2015 Outstanding Service Award from the IEEE Geoscience and remote Sensing Society. This is one of the three major awards and highest honors assigned from the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society.

·       2014 Best Journal Paper Award for the paper entitled: “Classification of hyperspectral data using attribute profiles based on supervised and unsupervised feature extraction techniques,” published on the International Journal of Image and Data Fusion.

·       Included in the ranking of the top 10 international scientists in the field of remote sensing. The ranking has been published in the international scientific journal "Scientometrics" (Vol. 96, pp. 203-219, 2013) and has been based on a bibliometric research for the period 1991-2010. The analysis considered 14.384 research institutes working in the field of remote sensing. Prof. Bruzzone was the European scientist with the highest score in the ranking.

·       Advisor of the PhD Thesis "Advanced Techniques for the Classification of Very High Resolution and Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Images" by Claudio Persello, which won the prize for the Best PhD Thesis on Patter Recognition presented in 2011. ·       Advisor of the Master Thesis "A Multilevel Approach to Change Detection for Surveillance with Very High Resolution SAR Images" by Carlo Marin, which won the prize for the 2011 Best Master Thesis on Remote Sensing awarded by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Italy Chapter.
